BUENOS AIRES, accommodation

The following is a small and personal choice among the great diversity of hotel  accomodation (luxury through standard)  available  in Buenos Aires.  Please consider that this webpage is BEING UPDATED and will be fully updated by early April (2005).

Buenos Aires has recently experienced a big boom in hotel construction.   I d love to hear from you of your experience.   BA can boast offering all kinds of hotel groups,  chains and memberships,  which are in a sense a kind of guarantee, but search well for  true spirit and service, individual personality and quality atmosphere, not always coinciding with costs.

Local rates are still in a bit of dissarray due to our recent crisis.  Check well both service and prices.  Try to get corporate rates (usually 20% lower and more for extended stays) book by internet and search for best weekend prices.    Many are offering special deals.  The following selection covers hotel accomodation in all categories: a few truly exclusive,   two categories of 5 stars hotels,  my favourite 4 starts and other less expensive possibilities.  For further selection  please search under Links.  If you prefer to stay in an apartment having all the freedom and place for yourself search among APARTMENTS TO LET amonG the links given below.

Exclusive and special  hotels in town : (over 300 +tax)  regular rates, corporate or congress rates about 20% lower)

ALVEAR PALACE,  located in the heart of fashionable Recoleta area, has been nominated as the best hotel in South America by Travel & Leisure for quality of service.   The Alvear is no doubt one of our most elegant hotels in a modern versionof palace and traditionally hosts  diplomats, politicians and VIP`s .

PARK HYATT (165 rooms) is one of the newest modern buildings in town, with a turn of the century French Mansion attached.  Exclusive luxury hotel (expensive) for those on  top.  Very well located for either business or leisure.  http://www.buenosaireshyatt.com

Immediately  below  and above the rest of other 5 star hotels I would recommend:

CAESAR PARK (Leading Hotels of the World)  very well located,   with a nice interior garden, in sophisticated,  elegant northern part of town,  just a few blocks from the Alvear Palace,  152 deluxe rooms opposite nice,  small,  expensive Patio Bullrich Mall, . The Caesar is close to Recoleta,  Quintana and Alvear beautiful "Parisian avenues".   About 8 blocks  (walking distance) from banking and Puerto Madero  This is one of the treasure hotels in BA and you can perceive it as soon as you are inside.   Not too big,  in fact the perfect size for a first class hotel. www.buenos-aires.caesarpark.com

INTERCONTINENTAL,  a beatiful 315 rooms luxurious elegant option, among newest luxury hotels in BA (built in 1995) with very good weekend saver plans (search on the Internet)  located in the historic Monserrat,  where the city began to develop,  close to Plaza de Mayo, the Cathedral and Cabildo and a few blocks from  business and banking area.  The hotel is beautiful, the area still needing some refurbishing and improvement, but the Townhall is working on it, as this is Buenos Aires historic area and plans are steady to improve, preserve and renew. http://www.interconti.com/argentina

PARK TOWER (The Luxury Collection,) (164 rooms and 16 Suites)  exclusive part of Sheraton Buenos Aires with all its splendour and beautiful view of BA and the river. In my opinion this part of the hotel should be separated from the too big Sheraton Buenos Aires and not so closely connected sharing restaurants, halls, corridors, galleries, meeting rooms, etc.   Perhaps some day they´ll decide to separate both buildings and give  this exclusive area the place it deserves to have a sense of its own.

HILTON BUENOS AIRES,  located in the parked area of Puerto Madero,  421 bright spacious rooms  with excelent view and state of the art meeting facilities.   2000 sq met Exbhition Center.  Attached are also Hilton Buenos Aires Residences with 108 one bedroom apartments and 92 studios. This  is the hotel competing with the Sheraton Convention Center Tower. The Hilton is a different option with excellent location in the open area of Puerto Madero,  catering for conventions and massive  top business conventions and exhibitions .  www.hilton.com

Other 5 stars (USD +200 VAT excluded)

MARRIOT PLAZA,  is the trully traditional,  beautiful downton  Buenos Aires hotel, built in 1909,   adopted by Marriot and recently renewed , with 282  rooms,  some renovated function rooms providing space for groups from 10 to 1500;  equipped with  one of  Buenos Aires best known restaurants serving the finest international cuisine and Argentine specialities. The Plaza is exceptionally   well located  opposite Plaza San Martin parked square and Florida pedestrian street,  across the park the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Santa Fe shopping avenue.  It is not far from the  perfect downtown hotel as everything seems to be running just as it should.    http://marriot.com

SHERATON BUENOS AIRES (24 floors, 739 rooms including 33 suites) best view in town (Excecutive floors and Park Tower), close to Florida pedestrian zone,  shopping areas and Galerias Pacifico,  also Puerto Madero recycled docks restaurants area.  It used to be the international hotel in BA,  lately competing with many newer ones.   Perhaps too big to be considered really first class.   A negative point is the close location to Retiro train terminal, (just opposito the small park - and therefore  not recommended to walk in/out at night. www.luxurylatinamerica.com  and  www.sheratonlatinamerica.com

CLARIDGE, used to be one of my favourites as  a  traditional elegant, European style  downtown hotel,  simple and refined,  located almost in the heart of banking area, a few steps from pedestrian Florida (unfortunately lost some of its previous glamour but lately trying to recover). The hotel is located round the corner of  the beautiful Galerias Pacifico.   Excellent cuisine and top service.  www.claridge-hotel.com

Recommendable out of town first class hotels are

HOTEL RESORT DE CAMPO Y POLO, (former Howard Johnson) located in Open Door, 45 minutes from downtown,  with an  indoor swimming pool,  polo fields,  football and hockey fields, volley and tennis and excellent cuisine. Ideal for sports and health minded travellers.   www.poloresort.com

SHERATON PILAR, located in Pilar,  140 rooms including 8 suites overlooking garden and pools.  Transfer to and from airport,   40 minutes from downton. Sheraton chain newest hotel in BA. Ideal for those needing to stay close to Parque Industrial Pilar or out of town, but not far.www.sheratonlatinamerica.com

My favourite,  immediately after those above are the following very  good options:(corporate rates about USD +150 VAT excluded

FEIR´S PARK ALL SUITES HOTEL,   110 large (40, 50 and 60m2)  well decorated suites, some with balconies,  located in the heart of town,  where Barrio Norte just starts, equipped with  business and  Fitness Centers (a beautiful pool overlooking the city)  and top level Cuisine.  Excellent option for business travellers.  Beware,  it is difficult to get. An early booking  recommended, imperative in  October/November busy months.  Good corporate rates and very good extended stay prices. www.feirspark.com.ar

ARGENTA TOWER new (October 1998), 100 suites (all equipped with kitchenette and or full kichens) bright,  spacious rooms, outdoor heated pool and sun deck on top floor.  Fitness Center, free parking. Hotel very well located,    overlooking the beautiful Socorro church, two blocks from Plaza San Martin and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,  one from Santa Fe shopping avenue, near  French embassy.    Early booking is imperative. http://www.argenta-tower.com.ar

Followed by somewhat less expensive good choices (+100/130 VAT excluded, several options)
EL CONQUISTADOR, nice quiet,  comfortable rooms and a perfect small roof top, bright breakfast area, close to Santa Fe (shopping) avenue, Plaza San Martin and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. www.elconquistador.com.ar

REGENTE PALACE next to the above with important reception, good attention, international cuisine, rooms newly decorated. www.regente.com

Reccommended cheaper options  located in 3 different parts of town:

SAVOY, for its traditional glamour, a sense of a wealthier Buenos Aires,  180 rooms and suites hotel,  beautiful building built in 1910 by Italian architect G. Agostini,   newly refurbished.  Perhaps its weak point is that it is in the heart of  Plaza Congreso noisy area and 15 blocks from downtown. www.savoy-hotel.com.ar

NOGARO (140  rooms including 10 suites), location and tradition, in the heart of Buenos Aires  historic area, close to Plaza de  Mayo and San Telmo,  surrounded by historic buildings. Built in 1930, renovated in 1998 keeping its classic French style.  Within walking distance to financial and  commercial areas www.nogarobue.com.ar

TORRE CRISTOFORO COLOMBO, out  of  proper downtown,  nearer greeen areas, close to city airport, Rural  Exhibition Center,  horse track,   polo field,  Libertador Avenue and the Parks of Palermo. Equipped with fitness center and outdoor swimming pool.   Good cheap option for those preferring to stay away from city noise. http://torrecc.com.ar
